Media standards fall: ZMC

The Zimbabwe Media Council will, from next year, work with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education to come up with a uniform curriculum for all media-training institutes in the country to improve media standards.

ZMC Commissioner, Mathew Takaona, said over the recent years the standards of journalism in the country had declined. He attributed this to lack of a proper and uniform curriculum that should be adhered to by training institutions.

“Standards of journalism have gone down in the country. There is a need to address the situation by introducing a uniform curriculum that should be followed by all training institutions,” said Takaona.

He said the new system would improve training standards in the country, adding that the council should also clamp down on unregistered fly-by-night journalism training colleges.

“The council will work with the relevant ministry in making sure all colleges comply with the new sytem,”said Takaona.

A report released by adjudicators of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists National Journalism and Media Awards 2012 also revealed that standards of journalism in the country had nose-dived. It called on the colleges to improve their curriculum.
