Moyo scales dizzy heights

He was an ordinary immigrant seeking better life opportunities when he arrived here in 2008, but now Nkosilathi Moyo (33), is considered one of a very rare breed.

The volleyball coach, a former Matabeleland North champion, has enjoyed great success and won numerous awards in the sport. He has been nominated among the top three coaches across all sporting disciplines in Gauteng Province on more than two occasions.

The Troyeville Primary School teacher was early this week unanimously appointed the Gauteng Regional Development Director for Volleyball South Africa, attached to the supportive Johannesburg Department of Sport.

“We have received great support from government during the three years I have worked here,” said Moyo, also mentor of the all-conquering Joburg Spikers Academy. “We have proper training equipment and some of the best facilities and this attracts many talented pupils to participate in this rapidly-rising sport.”

His teams’ invincibility saw Moyo become coach of the Gauteng Province’s Under-23 men squad last year. “It’s sometimes difficult to get youths into volleyball, but I am happy with the growing numbers now. I usually take them through school lessons before taking them to the volleyball pitch. I also give them extra lessons free of charge to keep them knowing that education will always play a vital role in their future. I want to see more young people off the streets, where they might end up taking drugs and committing crime.”

He is eyeing the national team’s coaching position. “I want to develop volleyball on a national level here, but this will not mean neglect of my academy, which remains my stepping stone to that national position. I will develop my players into national team material with hard work,” he said.

Moyo has defended the Volleyball SA Inter-provincial Trophy for three consecutive years with his under- 13 boys’ team. All his under-11 and 13 boys and girls were gold medallists at the Gauteng Volleyball Tournament and remain defending champions. His under-13 boys are also defending champions for Volleyball SA National Trophy.

He was Matabeleland North Volleyball chairman between 2006 and 2008, after winning several tournaments at provincial level. Born in Lower Gweru, Moyo attended Emathetshaneni primary, Tohwe Secondary and Hlangabeza High. He then enrolled at Bulawayo Polytechnic for an Integrated Library and Information Services Diploma, after which he worked at various schools as a librarian before becoming an English teacher at some secondary schools in Nkayi.
