Although the party policy states that election candidates should have been an active member of the party for at least five years to be eligible as a candidate, National Chairperson Lovemore Moyo said last week there was a provision that permitted new comers to be allowed to stand.
“If the person is strategically positioned and recommended by relevant party structures, the case would be considered by the party national council. The practice is not new to the party as it was done before,” Moyo emphasised.
Mashonaland East MDC-T Provincial Chairperson and Mbare Member of Parliament, Pinnel Denga, threw his weight behind Mutinhiri.
“Mutinhiri is quite an experienced and influential veteran politician. We would love having her as one of our parliamentary candidates. Our party does not impose candidates on the electorate, so we will merely facilitate her participation in the primary elections pencilled for next month. She is the only candidate who can wrestle one of the most strategic constituencies from Zanu (PF),” said Denga.
The fact that Mutinhiri was victimised by Zanu (PF) for her alleged ties with MDC, warranted leniency from her new party, he added.
Mutinhiri, regarded by MDC-T as the biggest catch from Zanu (PF) waters, will probably contest in her previous Marondera East constituency, which she lost following her expulsion from Zanu (PF) last year for being “too tolerant”.
