No future in looking backwards: Vigil

The results of the 2011 census in England and Wales were released this week, showing clearly that people from all over the world, including us Zimbabweans, have made a home in the UK.

The situation here is in stark contrast to the Stone Age racist culture at home, where even people whose families have lived there for generations are not considered to be Zimbabweans – not only whites but Malawians, Zambians, Mozambicans etc.

For Vigil supporters, one of the most depressing of the resolutions passed at Zanu (PF)’s recent conference called for increased censorship of foreign broadcasts and means of communication. We believe there is no future in shutting out the world and looking backwards.

We also noted with amusement Mugabe’s comment at the conference: ‘Looking back to April 2009 when Copac was set up, after a long, inexplicable and wasted 44 months, it is clear that the electoral cowards and enemies of the values and ideal of our liberation struggle have violated public trust by abusing their participation in the GPA-mandated constitution-making process to sabotage our electoral process.”
