Not yet over for Coventry

Zimbabwean swimming icon Kirsty Coventry has not officially quit the Olympics yet. Public opinion recently had it that the 29-year-old winner of more than 30 medals for Zimbabwe in various meets, had had her swansong at this year’s London Olympic Games, but the pool queen denied that in a recent interview with The Zimbabwean.

She revealed her desire to participate in the next edition of the games, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, because she had enjoyed participating at the global sporting event so much.

That is however, subject to the 2012 Zimbabwean Sportswoman of the Year having spent enough time with her family to ponder that participation.

“I am not thinking of quitting right now. I am just taking time with my family and thinking about whether I am going to Rio in four years’ time,” said Coventry, winner of seven Olympic medals in three editions.

She emphasised the importance of Zimbabwe investing in the youth for any future success at the Olympics. “I believe we have the talent. What we need is to put a developmental programme in place and the right people to take that talent to the next level,” she said.
