Official census results to be released next year

Detailed census results will only be availed towards the end of next year, as Zimstat is yet to carry out a completion of data processing exercise that includes scanning of census questionnaires and editing, according to the statistical department.

Yesterday, Zimstat released a press statement showing preliminary results, that pegged the new population at almost 13 million.

“Detailed results will be published in October next year. Zimstats is however going to be publishing a series of reports early next year which highlight provincial profiles,” read a statement by Zimstat that was released yesterday.

The preliminary results however indicate that Zimbabwean population will double in seventy years as the growth rate between 2002 and 2012 has increased by 1,1 percent each year.

“ The collected figures show that the average annual inter-censal population growth rate between 2002 and 2012 is 1,1 percent. With such a growth rate, the population will double in 70 years,” according to Zimstat.

It said its results showed that Zimbabwe’s population had grown to the current 12 973 808 from the previous 11.2 million in 2002, with the male population at 6 234 931 while the female population is now 6,738877.

This means that the population ratio of women to men is now 52:48. Harare is the most populous province with 16 percent whilst Bulawayo and Matebeleland South have the least population at five percent each.

The 2012 census population was the fourth exercise to be undertaken by the government since 1980. In 1982 Zimbabwe had a population of 7,5 million, a figure that increased to 10 million in 1992 and then 11.2 10 years later.
