Police disrupt MDC meeting

Police here disrupted an MDC-T meeting
this week, claiming that the party had conducted several meetings without
applying to the regulatory authority as prescribed in the Public Order
and Security Act.

Heavily armed police arrived at Mucheke Hall and ordered party
supporters to disperse, claiming that the meeting had not been
sanctioned by the regulatory authority.

The meeting was supposed to be addressed by Masvingo urban legislator,
Tongai Matutu, who is the deputy minister of Youth Indigenisation and
Economic Empowerment.

“They have refused us permission to hold the meeting and I tried my level best
to convince the senior police officers in Masvingo but they would not
listen,” said Matutu.

The police confirmed the development, adding that all
political parties had to apply for permission for any political gatherings.

“Political parties should know the law and we are saying no meetings
will be held without the knowledge of the police,” said a police
officer at Chikato police station.

Ironically, as the police disrupted an MDC-T rally at Mucheke Hall,
scores of Zanu (PF) supporters were at a meeting at Tanaiwa
 market.

Sources said the Zanu (PF) meeting had not been sanctioned by the police.

“As Zanu (PF) supporters we gather whenever we want because we do
not need any permission,” said a Zanu (PF) supporter.

Meanwhile, MDC-T supporters in Masvingo have called on Prime Minister Morgan
Tsvangirai to ensure that the police and other state security agents
are reformed before the polls expected next year.
