Soccer Star selection controversy

A former PSL administrator recently expressed disappointment with the controversy that has marred Denver Mukamba’s win of the 2012 Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year award.

The Dynamos talisman was, alongside Highlanders’ Masimba Mambare, one of the two favourites for the award, but that his eventual win came laced with allegations of favouritism did not impress the PSL’s former fixtures secretary, Sambo.

The former administrator called on journalists tasked with handling the process to show professionalism rather than showing their allegiance to certain teams. This follows allegations of regional division between Northern and Southern Region sports writers, which saw the latter being allegedly locked out of the counting process.

“This business of media personnel engaging in silly fights is not acceptable. Of course, they will have their differences, but stories on alleged tribalism and sabotage are quite bad. What message are they sending to the ordinary fan on the street?” he said, and suggested that the whole panel of selectors be replaced to avoid recurrences of such divisions.

“The sponsors cannot sit and watch this rot continue. It is high time PSL leadership dealt decisively with these unruly elements. Starting next year, they must let club captains and coaches vote for the best players. These players will never let the nation down because they are always together in training, compared to some of the panellists, who only watch the players on match-day.”
