Street theatre goes south

A group of three Bulawayo-based artists have taken theatre to the streets of the second city.

Street theatre is common in Harare, where artists such as Freddy “Kapfupi” Manjalima have popularised the genre. Realising its impact, the group Njakenjake is now popular for its free performances.

A recent show along Lobengula Street and Leopold Takawaira Avenue kept the audience in stitches throughout the performance.

“It’s all about creativity. We realized that this section of art was lacking in the city, go to Harare, Gweru, Masvingo and other places street theatre is popular – but not here,” said Ezra Dube, the group’s leader.

Dube said the group was finalising the video shooting of 34 episodes of street drama.

“We have just finished all the rehearsals and all we need to do is shoot the video and perhaps engage ZBC for possible screening,” he said, adding that the acts were inspired by Kapfupi and Sabhuku Vharai Zip from Masvingo. The scripts address social challenges faced by the current generation, while also maintaining a jovial atmosphere much enjoyed by the audience.
