ZPS officers fund Christmas party

Zimbabwe Prison Services officers were told it was compulsory to contribute to the end of year Christmas Party.

The officers, who recently wrote a letter of complaint, claim they are being forced to contribute $15 per head. The end of year party is slated for December 21 at Lake Chivero.

“We are being forced to contribute $15 to the party in spite of our paltry salaries and economic hardships. The committee is full of looters and last year they took away all leftovers from the party,” claimed an officer based at the ZPS Mashonaland Regional Headquarters.

The current fundraising committee is headed by Superintendent Elton Gumindega who works with Senior Assistant Commissioner, Wonder Chisora and Disciplinary and Principal Officer, Theresa Moyo.

An officer based at Mt Darwin Prison said they wrote an anonymous letter to the National HQ complaining against the forced donation but it fell on deaf ears.

“We wrote a letter to the national HQ. We were advised that those who do not contribute risk retribution or will never be promoted,” said the source.

ZPS spokesperson, Elizabeth Banda, urged members of the force to officially report their grievances.

“ZPS policy does not allow anyone to forcibly make officers pay money,” she told The Zimbabwean. “The Board of Management used to sponsor the Christmas party but due to economic hardships, there is now a National Headquarters Christmas Fund Committee.”

The Zimbabwean has established that, following investigations by this paper, senior officers last Friday said members should not be forced to contribute towards the party.
