The leaf–ravaging worms were first discovered in Richmond on New Year’s day and have since spread to most plots in the area. Farmers who spoke to The Zimbabwean said the situation was serious.
“I was shocked on New Year’s day to find my entire maize crop infested with the pest. The crop was germinating and the worms destroyed it. I do not know where I will get more seed and fertiliser to replant,” said Lyoid Moyo, a farmer in the area.
He said the planting deadline had already passed and even if he happened to get inputs, he did not expect high yields.
Another farmer, Charles Gumbo, accused agricultural extension officials of poorly reacting to the outbreak.
“I have been to the Arex offices to report the armyworm but the offices were closed for the holidays. How can these people all vacate the offices at this crucial farming period? They should have visited the affected farmers and assessed the damage,” he said.
Gumbo said he bought carbaryl to contain the worms but it did not work. “Some said I should try Dimethoate but it is very expensive,” he added.
Efforts to get a comment from the Plant Protection Institute and Agritex officials were in vain as they were reported to be still on holiday.
