Battle over control of co-op

A fight for control of Herbert Chitepo Housing Cooperative in Kuwadzana Extension characterised the year 2012 amid revelations of corruption in the executive.

Disgruntled members of the cooperative founded in 2004 recently wrote an anonymous letter to the Commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission to immediately investigate allegations that the current executive, chaired by David Chinyanga and Secretary Victor Munyanyi, was clinging to power. It also accused them of failing to hold annual general meetings and victimising members.

“Many founding members are yet to benefit from the housing cooperative yet newly recruited members are being allocated residential stands. Each founding member has paid a minimum of $5,000 in contributions to date,” reads the letter.

$120,000 was reportedly injected into local businesses from the co-operative coffers without permission of the members. The letter also states that the housing project is a product of “Garikai/ Hlalani kuhle”, a government initiative to benefit homeless citizens.

Aspiring Zanu (PF) candidate for Kuwadzana Constituency, Chinyanga, accused MDC-T members of peddling the allegations.

“They are power hungry and jealous of the achievements I made with the co-operative and thus want to tarnish my image because they know very well, as soon as I win the primaries, I am going to get the seat from Lucia Matibenga,” he said.

Chinyanga said all allegations were false as annual general meetings were held and audits done by government auditors.

“Currently, a government auditor is auditing the businesses and how the money has been used. As you can see all these houses have been built and the roads are being constructed, pipelines, cables and many things are being funded,” he said.

Recent media reports claim that several Harare councillors and officials were being investigated for allocating residential stands as kicks backs from housing co-operatives that were allocated land in and around the city.
