Billiat stays with Ajax

Absa Premiership side, Ajax Cape Town, appear to have resisted a big-money offer for their star player, Khama Billiat.

Officials from the outfit insisted this week that the tear-away attacking midfielder would not be sold to any local club. The 22-year-old national team winger has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks, with the so-called Big Three of Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and reigning treble champions Orlando Pirates rumoured to be interested in his services.

Sundowns, who offered a record-breaking R10 million, appeared to be his most probable destination. Nonetheless, assistant coach, Wilfred Mugeyi, told The Zimbabwean this week that Billiat would still be Ajax’s player at today’s close of the transfer window.

“Khama is not going anywhere,” said Mugeyi. “The first option for him is to go to Europe. He just needs to be patient and I have spoken to him about that. Age is still on his side and his time will come.”

The Urban Warriors’ mother club and reigning Dutch Champions, Ajax Amsterdam, are also said to be keenly watching the progress of the former Caps United striker, who has been a revelation since joining the youthful Cape Town side three years ago.

Mugeyi added that Ajax would also retain the services of Billiat’s former Caps teammate, Tafadzwa Rusike, whose contract runs until June. “Rusike will definitely sign a new contract. There are no doubts about that. He works very hard and is a good professional. He is still part of the team’s plans.”

Media reports suggested that a cloud hanging over Rusike’s future following alleged involvement in the “Asiagate” scandal was delaying contract talks. He recently signed a ZIFA fine for that.
