Camfed fund female education

More than 5, 000 girls from disadvantaged backgrounds will this year be able to attend school, thanks to an initiative by

Campaign for Female Education, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to eradicating poverty through the empowerment of young women.

Angeline Murimirwa, Camfed Executive Director for Zimbabwe and Malawi, said this followed the success of an appeal from well-wishers.

“In Zimbabwe, we are excited about fresh possibilities and adventures ahead thanks to gifts from donors,” said Murimirwa. “Our ‘Let her give!’ appeal has already raised enough money to send 5 182 girls to primary school for a year and provide comprehensive bursaries for 725 secondary school students.”

United Kingdom national, Ann Cotton, founded Camfed in 1993. This followed her visit to Zimbabwe to investigate why girls’ school enrolment in rural areas was low.

Camfed’s successful model has now been replicated in more than 2 000 communities in Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. More than 1, 9 million children in the poorest areas of these countries have benefited from the organisation’s innovative education programmes.
