Although the Green Machine are ranked among the top three teams in Zimbabwean football behind Dynamos and Highlanders, coach Mkuphali Masuku said they would be comfortable with a top eight finish.
“That is our aim at the moment and whatever comes on top of that will be a bonus,” said Masuku.
The Harare giants finished last season in 10th position with 39 points from 30 games behind their bitter rivals and eventual title winners, Dynamos.
Makepekepe begin every year as one of the favourites for league and cup glory, but have failed to emulate their back-to-back triumph under Charles Mhlauri in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
Masuku, a former Highlanders player and coach, revealed that he had retained most of the players who served last season, including Pride Tafirenyika, Clive Kawinga, Hardlife Zvirekwi, and captain, Tapuwa Khumbuyani, who was being sought by Dynamos.
He hoped to add guile by recruiting preferably under-23 players to the former champions, who recently drew more than 40 players to their trials, including prodigal son striker, Tawanda Nyamandwe, who also played for Kiglon, Monomotapa, and Motor Action.
