Last year town chairperson, Darlington Mudondo, was also suspended by Chombo, followed by the expulsion of town secretary, Tapiwa Marongwe. While Mudondo was accused of incompetence. Marongwe was expelled on allegations of misconduct. The two, however, denied the allegations with the MDC-T saying the move was political. The MDC-T accused Chombo of abusing the Urban Councils Act by firing the officials, including several other councillors and mayors from the party countrywide.
In the latest development, Nyandoro has been suspended for being involved in an act of dishonest and/or negligent performance of duty in terms of section 140 of the Urban Councils Act (Chapter 29:15.)
Allegations are that he purchased a vehicle for himself without the consent of council. However, his Gweru-based lawyer, Reginald Chidawanyika, said the suspension was baseless and Nyandoro should be reinstated. “There is evidence that there was a meeting held by council which regularised the purchase of the vehicle,” he said.
Sources told The Zimbabwean that housing officer, Mlindazwe Sithole, and the council’s internal auditor, Tavaziva Mavhengere, are opposed to the suspension of Nyandoro and have since indicated that his conduct at the local authority was blameless.
