Council’s new payment plans

Mutare City Council will this year negotiate payment plans with ratepayers who owe $18 million.

The Town Clerk, Obert Muzawazi, last week said those paying their rates were in line for promotion packages.

“We are looking forward to at least getting a quarter of the money we are owed. This will enable us to operate normally. We have come up with promotional packages that will encourage ratepayers to pay their debts. This will also improve service delivery in the city,” he said.

The local authority has slashed rates for businesses operating in low-income communities, in a bid to make them affordable.

“There is no need to increase rates when people are already failing to pay. Tariffs for high density businesses have been slashed together with various other charges this year.”

Meanwhile, the council will soon rehabilitate traffic lights in the city following the recent signing of the Borrowing Powers Certificate by the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Ignatius Chombo and Finance Minister Tendai Biti.

The certificate gives the local authority the power to borrow money from banks.

“This means that we now able to borrow money from the Infrastructural Development Bank of Zimbabwe for traffic lights. This will go a long way towards reducing accidents in the city centre,” he said.
