Glory days for Pool

Midlands Pool League chairperson, Paul Mukwembi, is hopeful of new fortunes for the regional pool league.

He took over from Molest Gaka, now based in Canada, in weekend elections conducted by Sports and Recreation Commission regional commissioner Simon Masaka.

Mukwembi beat Edward “Mboma” Ganyani, Blessmore Ndoro and Midlands State University lecturer, Peter Mandava to the post.

“There is a whole strategy plan to be employed in making the game move forward in the region,” said Mkwembi. “I have been in the game for 10 years and I know where there are gaps. The first thing for us will be to partner with sponsors so that people who love the game can enjoy it. We also need to address issues on transparency of league funds and complete the exercise of writing our own constitution.”

The league is endowed with great competitors like Russel Washaya, the most decorated player in the region, but has been hard-hit by internal bickering on the contestation for positions. Last year, Ganyani was rumoured to have attempted forming a splinter league, but that was reportedly stopped by a stiff challenge.
