Hailstorm destroys homes

At least 40 families here are living in the open after a hailstorm recently swept across the district destroying their homes.

While city-dwellers enjoyed the hailstorm, some in rural Chivi had their homes destroyed.

The victims have been homeless for two weeks. The Masvingo Civil Protection Unit has failed to assist them, arguing that it does not have any funding. Under the country’s laws, the unit is mandated to mobilise resources for disaster victims in the country.

It also emerged yesterday that the Member of Parliament for the area, Munyaradzi Paul Magwana, was moving around with a begging bowl to get help for the affected families. Mangwana has invited Non Governmental Organisations, churches and well-wishers to assist the victims.

“We are appealing to anyone with any form of assistance to come forward. Some of us are living with relatives while others are still in the open and the situation is unbearable,” said a spokesman for the victims, Silas Machona.
