Hospital accused of corruption

Harare Central Hospital School of Nursing has come the under spotlight for allegedly taking bribes to enrol student nurses.

Sources told The Zimbabwean that applications for training were being processed on the basis of whether one paid a bribe or not. One of the informants said applicants were being made to pay bribes ranging up to $1000 for a general nursing course.

In addition to general nursing, the hospital also offers training in anaesthetics, intensive and coronary care as well as theatre and ophthalmic studies. The institution enrols two streams of about 60 students in January and July. “Individual applicants are finding it difficult to get places as corruption is taking its toll,” said the source. “Demand for places is increasing so applicants are ready to pay a fortune to get a place. Tutors are the biggest culprits in this scam.”

When contacted for a comment, Harare Central Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Peggy Zvavamwe’s Secretary referred all questions to the School of Nursing Principal Tutor, Irene Sambo, who denied the allegations.
