Man offers $15 child support

A local man told the court this week that he could only afford to pay $15 child support for his 11-month-old baby.

Timothy Magure was dragged before Mutare Civil court by his ex-wife, Shorai Margaret Chapeyama, for failing to make maintenance payments for their baby.

Chapeyama was demanding $150 a month.

However, Magure disputed the paternity of the baby, saying Chapeyama threw him out of the house after a dispute and told him he wasn’t responsible for the pregnancy.

“She openly told me that I was not father of this child,” said Magure.

Magure told the court he could only afford $15 as maintenance since he was an airtime vendor at Dangamvura and had other four children.

“$150 is too much. I make a profit of $50 a month,” he pleaded. Chapeyama denied ever saying that Magure was not the father of the child.

“We had an argument but I never said the child was not his,” said Chapeyama.

Magistrate Sekai Chiwundura ordered Magure to pay $30 as interim maintenance pending the results of the paternity test, which should be submitted to the courts.
