Officially handing over the equipment to the HCC on Thursday, Mbada Corporate Services Executive, George Manyaya, described the donation as a positive step in the fight against water borne diseases bedevilling the capital.
“The water crisis is a health crisis and, as such, Mbada Diamonds has seen it as a noble gesture to also partner with the City of Harare in its drive to make sure that Harare residents get access to clean and safe drinking water,” he said.
HCC controls 235 boreholes sunk by development partners and a recent survey of 85 boreholes revealed that 26 of the water sources were contaminated by faecal matter that can cause typhoid.
The consignment included chlorine canisters and testers. The mining company, through its corporate social responsibility programme, has diversified its focus to the health sector, hence its 2013 theme, “Mbada in Health”.
“We will not tire and our next step is the Mutare City Council where our team is currently engaging them and looking at possible areas of assistance. This is our home and we need to save the lives of people and the nation at large,” he said.
Harare Mayor, Muchadeyi Masunda, welcomed the gesture, saying without corporate assistance, his council could not deliver world class health delivery.
“Mbada Diamonds is a new player in the mining sector but has lived to its motto, ‘Harnessing diamonds for the people’. Their response to calls for assistance is swift-footed just like the leopard is and very smart,” said Masunda.
He called on communities to look after the donated equipment well. “It is all our responsibility, especially the communities, to jealously guard the equipment and the boreholes meant to benefit everyone,” he said.
