To kick-start the initiative, the giant mining company recently donated medical equipment worth $65 000. The equipment included beds, trolley bins, dispensary trolleys and wheelchairs, which will benefit the Mutare community.
Mbada Diamonds Managing Director, Tendai Kudyamusuma, said the mining company made this donation after realising the need to improve the health sector among local communities.
“We have seen it worthwhile to move into the health sector. As Mbada Diamonds we have noted with great concern that many people are dying due to cancer, HIV and AIDS and heart diseases. We have also noted that these ailments can be treated if financial resources were availed to the health institutions.”
Kadyamusuma added that the company was moved by Mutare Provincial Hospital’s needs and the challenges they faced in their day-to-day basic operations.
“The hospital has a large catchment area where it caters for over two million people and we feel that it is appropriate to hand over this donation to ease the burden on the hospital,” he added. “We are happy that Mutare Provincial Hospital has become the first beneficiary of this initiative. We are harnessing diamonds for the people and this donation is just the beginning of a long journey.”
The Medical Superintend for Mutare General Hospital, Mubashar Ijaz, said the donation by Mbada Diamonds was an important gesture.
“The donation has come at the right time and it will go a long way towards alleviating the serious problems facing our institution. The sight of relatives carrying their adult patients on their backs as they moved around the hospital was very common,” said Dr Ijaz.
Mutare General Hospital is a referral hospital for seven district hospitals and seven mission health centres in the province. The out-patients and maternity wings have been under developed and it was the hospital’s call to have the wings modernised.
Since its registration in August 2009, Mbada Diamonds has undertaken extensive investment into diamond mining operations. These operations are being progressively upgraded to cater for expansion and are matched by corporate, environmental and social investment into the communities in which the company operates.
