Last year, MDC-T Youth Assembly Secretary General, Promise Mkwananzi, told The Zimbabwean, that the youth wing would not back down until its demand of was met. However, in a recent interview, MDC-T Youth Assembly President, Solomon Madzore, said the youths were gunning for a stake and not a quota.
“The party policy does not allow us to have a quota so we are going to contest in the primary elections to ensure that we get a stake. This does mean that we will work alone as the Youth League, we will be working together with the main body. We already have potential candidates in all the provinces who are ready to contest in the primaries,” said Madzore.
The move by the Youth Assembly is part of their 2013 resolution made by the MDC-T National Executive Committee last week.
“The assembly resolved to pursue its resolution to field and support youth candidates in local government and parliamentary elections. The wing will encourage all structures of the Youth Assembly from the branch to the national,” read the resolutions.
In a bid to achieve gender parity in all spheres of leadership, the assembly resolved to restrain its male members to contest positions earmarked by female counterparts.
“Women have been sidelined for a long time, so we resolved that we are not going to contest against them but will give them a chance,” said Madzore.
