NGO outreach program disrupted

An outreach program organised by non-governmental organisations on the recently concluded draft constitution has been could not proceed on Thursday in Kwekwe when rowdy youths disrupted it.

The meeting that was being co-hosted by Zimbabwe Organisation of the Youth in Politics and Centre for Community Development Zimbabwe could not proceed after the youths invaded the venue.

The organisers of the meeting linked the disruption to a shadowy group called Al Shabaab that has been linked to Zanu (PF), even though the party denies the claim.

"Some prominent Zanu (PF) youths invaded the stadium before we even got to the venue. We got calls from people who were attending the meeting saying they were being barred from entering the stadium.

" When we arrived at the venue we were welcomed by a group of Youths chanting Zanu (PF) slogans. They chased us away saying we are a regime change agent," said Nkosilathi Moyo, ZOYP Director.

He said the meeting was meant to update the community on the developments and progress of the constitution making process ahead of the referendum scheduled for March.

" We are not driving any political agenda. All we wanted was to give an update on the recently concluded Copac draft. We even got clearance from the police last week," he added.

Moyo castigated the Zimbabwe Republic Police for failing to contain the situation despite being present at the scene.

" The police did not provide security though they were present at the venue. They only asked us to make a formal report at Mbizo Police station," said Moyo.

NGOs and Civil Society groups have been facing resistance and rebuke from political parties in recent weeks.
