Mwonzora was reacting to questions asked by The Zimbabwean, following rumours that the top members of MDC-T National Youth Wing had seats put aside for them.
“In MDC-T we do not have holy cows to protect. Every aspiring candidate will be contested at the primaries if he meets the basic requirements. Party youths are not exempt,” said Mwonzora.
He said the requirement would be slightly different in constituencies where the party had sitting members of parliament. “In constituencies where the party has sitting MPs, the candidate selection process will start with endorsements. The sitting candidate will have to garner two thirds approval of voting party structure members.
“If he succeeds at the endorsement stage he will pass the primaries uncontested. In the event he fails, then he will be contested at the primaries,” Mwonzora told The Zimbabwean. Rumours regarding the possible reservation of constituencies for MDC-T youth gathered momentum following the release of party President for youths, Solomon Madzore, from remand prison late last year.
Party Secretary General Youth Assembly, Promise Mkwananzi, told The Zimbabwean: “As youths, we are lobbying for a 25 percent quota allocation of constituencies in the coming election. Youths should have a significant representation in parliament as future leadership.”
