Noise pollution crackdown

The Bulawayo City Council has resolved to engage the police to arrest Sport Bar owners and residents who play loud music at night. The BCC said playing loud music was a nuisance and should be stopped.

This is according to minutes of a recent council meeting where councillors from different suburbs expressed anger over the issue. Councillor Phineous Ndlovu of Ward 14 said BCC should invoke its by-laws to reduce noise levels from people’s radios.

Councillor Nduna Dladla of Ward 11 concurred, adding that police should be engaged to force Sports Bars to reduce noise levels at their premises. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police is mandated to closely monitor these facilities and enforce relevant noise by-laws,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Amen Mpofu supported the move to engage the police to arrest noisemakers in the city. “Council should reduce noise levels by effectively monitoring premises. Enforcement regarding noise by-laws is done by the ZRP. The council should come up with a policy to address noise challenges,” said Mpofu.
