Peter’s debut album to determine Dhewa’s legacy

“My debut album will determine whether my father’s legacy lives on or not,” says the son of the late Sungura icon, Peter Moyo, who is struggling to release an album a year after taking over his father’s band, Utakataka Express.

Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo died after a long battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in October 2011, leaving Peter with the burden of taking over the band.

The “Young Igwe” as he is affectionately known has been playing his father’s songs ever since he took over but he said he would not give his fans a half-baked cake, so was taking his time before releasing the album.

“This album is very important as it will determine whether my father’s legacy lives on or not. If I release an album that does not at least match my father’s standards that will be the end. I need to keep working on my vocals. My father left some singles which I will incorporate on the album,” he said.

Peter said he made a promise to his father to keep his fans entertained and to uplift his legacy by producing quality music.

“My father left a mark in the music industry because he worked hard. I will do the same before l release my album. I have already composed the songs, what is only left is to perfect my voice. I have even performed some of the songs on my coming album at my live shows and fans loved them,” he added.

Peter wanted to release his debut album last year at his father’s anniversary but his producer reportedly told him he was not yet ready.

Gospel musician Pastor Charles Charamba has been assisting Peter with vocal lessons to prepare him for the recording of his upcoming debut album.
