Police want fingerprint allowance

Zimbabwe Republic Police officers taking part in the Automated Fingerprint Information System are bitter after they did not receive a daily allowance.

According to police sources, communication from the Police General Headquarters in June last year indicated that officers from outside Harare were supposed to get $25 per day, while the amount for the local officers was not disclosed.

However, officers from outside Harare were later told that they could only participate in the project if they were able to secure their own accommodation without getting any allowances.

The sources said the first phase of the project started with the delivery of an assortment of 50 computers, a server and training of 180 police officers in the conversion of finger print data from hard to soft copies.

The data conversion, which is expected to be finished within two years, was approved six years ago but had been lagging behind due to lack of funding.

“Before the operation we were promised a daily allowance of $25 but when we started the process we were told that we would be getting breakfast, lunch and supper only,” said an officer who declined to be named.

Another source within the police force said he believed that the money had been diverted to other projects by high ranked officials.

When contacted for comment, ZRP senior spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, referred questions to the Police Criminal Investigations Department acting spokesperson, Detective Inspector

Ntombizodwa Chiduwuro, who requested the questions in writing. She, however, had not responded by the time of going to print.
