MDC-T official said people were no longer able to weed and plough in their fields as they were being force marched to Zanu (PF) meetings everyday by Zanu (PF) supporters and war veterans.
The situation has reached alarming levels in wards 2 and 3, where several MDC supporters have been given eviction notices by traditional leaders working hand-in-hand with Zanu (PF) supporters.
The local MDC-T chairman, Mike Maparo, said the war veterans and Zanu (PF) supporters have allegedly declared some “no-go” areas for MDC supporters.
“We have tried to make reports to the police and senior party officials, but the situation is just getting worse,” said Maparo. “Everyone in the area who supports our party is now afraid of openly participating in party activities and programmes.”
Bikita South voted in MDC-T MP Jani Vharandeni in 2008. Contacted for comment Zanu (PF) Masvingo provincial chairman Lovemore Matuke professed ignorance, saying as no-one in his party had been ordered to beat up people or harass them.
“As a revolutionary party we know that we have to attract supporters through our policies and not violence,” said Matuke. “Some of the claims being made by MDC-T supporters are clearly unfounded hence you should dismiss them in their entirety.”
