Polls are critical: contestants

The polls are critical as they have an important bearing on the future of the country, political representatives have agreed.

Zanu (PF) national spokesperson, Rugare Gumbo, said the elections were important because they would bring an end to the Government of National Unity which he said had failed to move the country forward economically.

“We must conduct them in a transparent manner so that the results are credible,” said Gumbo.

MDC-T spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora, said: “The election is importantbecause it is about choice between empty indigenisation propaganda and genuine efforts to create employment in Zimbabwe.”

In terms of shaping the political future of Zimbabwe, Mwonzora said: “The elections will represent a defeat of all forms of violence and the culture of impunity.”

Taking us seriously

Zanu- Ndonga President Gondai Paul Vutuza said: “These elections are important because they will usher in a new political scenario in Zimbabwe, which will bring new economic order.”

He added: “It is important that we have credible elections because if we have a repeat of 2008, the international community will not take us seriously. We need credible elections so that the international community will see us as mature persons.”

Vutuza expressed optimism of a free and fair poll “because for the first time we have the parties preparing for the elections together”.

No seesaws

MDC-N spokesperson, Nhlahla Dube said: “Elections are most important for us because investors want consistency, policy clarity and do not want seesaws tied to political statements.”

He said investors had developed a wait and see approach on Zimbabwe, so it was important for the country to show political maturity.

“These elections have a natural bearing on the future performance of the economy and thus we need credible elections to boost investor confidence in Zimbabwe,” said Dube.

Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn spokesperson, Silver Bhebhe, said the new elections would bring to an end the bickering in the GNU and lack of policy consistency which he said had affected economic growth in Zimbabwe.

“In 2009 the GNU tried to revive the economy but they have failed because of bickering and pointing of fingers. The only way to end this is to have one party that is directly elected with a mandate from the people,” said Bhebhe.

He added: “This time I think there will be one winner and this is how important the elections are for Zimbabwe because we will have sound economic policies and less bickering.”

However, MDC-99 President Job Sikhala said; “They are not important in any sense. They will actually worsen the situation because the dictator is going to remain in power.”
