Affected villagers said they were stranded with no shelter as the government had not come to their aid.
According to unofficial statistics, about 200 villagers lost their homes and crops in the torrential rains. The heavy rains pounded Tsholotsho on Tuesday, leaving Magotsha, Jimila and Sawudweni villages worst affected.
“I was sleeping at night with my three kids when our hut collapsed on us. We were lucky to escape with minor injuries,” said Louis Moyo.
Moyo has sought temporary shelter at nearby shops as he waits for government assistance.
Donald Nyoni, another affected villager, said he was thinking of relocating from Tsholotsho after the rains destroyed his home.
“We have had heavy rains before but we have never experienced the heavy rains that destroyed our homes. I plan to relocate from the area because I am sacred that if I rebuild my house, the rain might come again next year and destroy everything,” Nyoni added.
Apart from the destroyed homes, the rains ruined crops.
“We will have to queue for food assistance since we lost everything. All my crops were destroyed by the rains,” Miriam Sibanda of Jimila area said.
Senator Believe Gaule urged the government to intervene to assist affected villagers.
