Soldier and son assault policemen

A senior member of the Zimbabwe National Army has been accused of enlisting his son’s help to physically assault police officers who visited his home to investigate a case of robbery.

Prosecutor Chipo Matshe said on January 3, Assistant Inspector Gerald Muzengeza, Sergeant Msipa and two female police officers, Constable Mushayavanhu and Nyamazunzu of ZRP Mkoba, visited the accused, Christopher Zuva, at his home. The officers were looking for a suspect, Tinashe Zuva.

Upon arrival, the soldier’s son, Tofara (23), came out of the house and told the police officers that Tinashe was in Harare at his workplace. At that point the father also appeared and asked to see the police officers’ badges.

The police officers, who had information that Tinashe was there, insisted on searching the house. Zuva, however, denied them access, saying he wanted a search warrant first.

When the police officers asked Zuva and Tofara to accompany them to the police station, they refused. The officers then tried to arrest Tofara who allegedly reacted violently. He hit Nyamazunzu, who is pregnant, on the stomach and grabbed Muzengeza by the shirt collar, tearing it off.

He allegedly turned on Msipa while Zuva wrestled with the other officers. A reinforcement of armed police officers arrived at the scene after a tip off from members of public, leading to the arrest of father and son.

The two are both in custody and awaiting trial before magistrate Rutendo Muchena facing charges of assault and obstructing the course of justice. Tinashe was not found.
