His album became successful after many mistook it as belonging to award-winning gospel sensation Blessing Shumba while Mhere. As all the drama regarding his album unfolded, the 24 year-old never bothered to set the record straight, choosing to cash in on the confusion.
Mhere was born in 1988 in Mukaro, Gutu and grew up in the Midlands capital of Gweru.
He first tapped into the music industry as a vocalist for aMkoba-based group, Rock of Ages, with no success. He moved to Harare in 2007. The following year he engaged producer Clive Mono Mukundu for his debut album “TinodaNyasha” which was a huge flop.
He finally made a breakthrough when he released his controversial album titled “Anoita Minana” which was mistaken as Shumba’s due to the striking similarities in style and presentation.
After The Zimbabwean carried an article with Shumba stating that he had not released any song, unsuspecting fans again mistook Mhere for Elton Bushe – an inmate at Mutare remand prison who had worked with Shumba on a project titled “Munamato Wangu”.
When critics started criticising Mhere for copying Shumba, he made frantic efforts to blame the “coincidence” as emanating from the fact that they shared the same producer, Lyton Ngolomi.
This was shortly before it became evident that Mhere did not only imitate Shumba’s style but also copied the hit song “Favour” on his album originally done by Kudakwashe Kunyavapa in 2010.
