Makumbe (64) collapsed at his Msasa Park home on 27 January and died on arrival at Arcadia Medical Centre.
Mourners who attended the burial ceremony described the late Makumbe as a fearless and loving character who was dedicated to improving people’s welfare.
Present at the burial of the late academic were Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn President, Simba Makoni and several senior MDC-T officials as well as party supporters and members from surrounding communities.
In his speech, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai described the late professor as a fearless academic who was dedicated to the development of the country as evidenced by his decision to participate in active politics.
“John was involved in the activities of the MDC from the very first stages of its formation. He was involved in most of the behind-the-scenes activities and he is one of the people who worked hard for the party to be what it is today,” said Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai said the void left by Makumbe will be difficult to fill. Chief Makumbe described the late professor as a source of inspiration for the people of Buhera.
“To us, John was a role model. He is someone who always stood for what was right and would not hesitate to speak the truth.
"What we cherished most about him is that he wanted the best for his people and was always willing to share advice with everyone despite his status as a professor,” said Chief Makumbe.
Makumbe is survived by his wife, Virginia and three children.
