Zanu supporters suspended

Zanu (PF) has suspended scores of its supporters including provincial executive members for allegedly causing chaos at a meeting in which President Robert Mugabe was endorsed as the party’s candidate in Masvingo.

Following a meeting between the party provincial leaders and Secretary for Administration Dydimus Mutasa at the Chiefs Hall recently, it was resolved to suspended all those implicated in the chaos.

Among those who were suspended are Masvingo businessman, Edmund Mhere, who is Secretary for Transport and Welfare in the provincial executive. He was accused asking the police to unleash dogs on party supporters.

Also suspended are other ordinary party supporters who allegedly played a role in disrupting the meeting.

Those suspended will know their fate after the completion of investigations.

Mutasa confirmed to The Zimbabwean that he had a lengthy meeting with the Masvingo provincial executive leadership where issues of discipline were discussed.

“Yes we met party leaders in Masvingo and I am not at liberty to tell you details of that meeting”, said Mutasa. “We were talking about discipline within our revolutionary party.”

Masvingo Zanu (PF) Provincial Chairman Lovemore Matuke could not be reached for comment.

A meeting convened by the party last year turned nasty after some senior party officials ordered the police to unleash dogs on other party supporters who were deemed uninvited guests.

Police, acting on the instructions of senior party officials, set dogs on the crowd resulting in at least 10 supporters being injured. The incident happened in front of party spokesman Rugare Gumbo. He had to openly apologise to the people for the incident.

Despite the chaos, the meeting controversially endorsed President Robert Mugabe as the party’s official presidential candidate in elections pencilled for this year.
