Following the ejection of Kunonga from the Cathedral in November last year, the Harare City Council moved in to disconnect water supplies owing to the huge debt.
Kunonga lost control of Anglican Church following a Supreme Court ruling by Deputy Chief Justice, Luke Malaba, who ruled that Kunonga had left the CPCA in 2007 and was therefore not entitled to control of any properties.
In January this year, Anglican Bishop, Chad Gandiya revealed to The Zimbabwean that they would engage Harare Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda on the issue claiming Kunonga should be the one responsible for payment of the bill.
However, CPCA Diocesan Secretary for Harare, Reverend Clifford Dzawo, said efforts to engage with the Harare City Council had hit a snag hence the continued disconnection of water supplies at their premises.
“The council told us to pursue Kunonga since we were claiming that he should be responsible for the debt. But there is no way we can engage Kunonga because even when he left the Cathedral, there was supposed to be a smooth handover takeover but the process later on turned violent,” said Dzawo.
Some CPCA houses dotted around Harare, which were being rented out by Kunonga, have also had their water supplies disconnected due to huge bills.
Dzawo said the CPCA was faced with the uphill task of paying huge water and telephone bills that were accrued in other churches around Harare at the time of Kunonga’s reign.
“It is not Kunonga who owes us but the Anglican Cathedral. We do not mind who pays it but the bill has got to be settled,” said Harare City Council spokesperson, Lesley Gwindi.
