Beauty pageant in trouble

The Miss Zimbabwe pageant’s future is looking bleak as, the second month into 2013, nothing seems to be happening on the ground. The pageant, run by 80-year-old Kiki Divaris through the Miss Zimbabwe Trust, struggled to keep afloat last year. It received the licence from the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, which had coordinated it for five years.

The Trust frantically looked for resources but Divaris admitted the going has been tough.

Currently, there is silence regarding the 2012 to 2013 edition, with no provincial pageants having taken place. When contacted for comment, Divaris responded: “Right now I have nothing to say but when I do have something to tell you, I will call you.” Problems bedevilling the pageant have a direct impact on preparedness for this year’s Miss World finals, as the local winner is bound to be ill-equipped for the global showcase.

Sources within the Miss Zimbabwe Trust said it was unlikely the pageant would be held at all due to financial struggles. One source disclosed that with the way things are looking Bongani Dlakama, the reigning queen might be allowed to run a second term, because of the absence of new competition.

“To be honest there is no money and sponsors are not willing to help us. I think the problem is the misdemeanour and immorality people associate with modelling with. “So far it is too late to plan the 2013 edition and on a low budget it can prove to be a disaster and flop. It is most likely that Bongani will be the 2012-2013 queen as there is no one to take over.

“One needs at least six months to properly prepare for Miss World and with nothing having been done so far, there is no hope,” said the source.

Last year Bongani had to use her own money for the Miss World preparations for make-up and some part of her wardrobe.

She also had inadequate time to prepare as she was crowned in April and the Miss World event took place three months later.
