Celebrating Valentine’s Day

As love lingers in the air with people commemorating Valentine’s Day today, The Zimbabwean spoke to celebrities on how they planned to celebrate.

Peter Moyo, affectionately known as the “Young Igwe” said Valentine was about spending quality time with loved ones and he was going to be with his grandmother.

“I will be with Mbuya Chihera, I took her from Buhera and I am staying with her in Mbizo. I don’t get to spend much time with her as I am occupied with rehearsals and shows,” he said.

Former Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Rumbidzai Mudzengerere said: “This is a day where every lady expects to be spoiled by her man. I don’t know what is in store for me but l will prepare dinner for my fiancé,” she said.

Gospel musician Amos Mahendere said he celebrates Valentine’s every year by buying a bunch of roses for his wife and composing a song for her.

“Ladies love this day so much and they feel offended if you fail to buy them gifts. It has become a culture for me to buy my wife a bunch of roses every year. I also take my time to compose a song for her, reminding her of my undying love,” said Mahendere.

Dendera maestro Tryson Chimbetu, who insists he is single and searching, said Valentine was just another lonely day for him.

“I do believe in Valentine but I am not dating at the moment. I advise couples to make their Valentine special by visiting the New Start centre and getting tested. Many people are dying of HIV/AIDS thus it is important to know your status and that of your loved one,” said Chimbetu.

Prominent Urban groove Alexio Gwenzi well known as “Goodchild” said he was looking forward to the day as he had been saving for months to make it special for his fiancée. “I am ashamed of making an excuse on the day because just like her birthday it only comes once a year,” he said.

Studio 263 Actress, Amanda Mugoni who wedded last year could not hide her joy and said, “These are my early months of marriage and this will be our first Valentine together as husband and wife so definitely the day will be full of surprises.”

Rute Mbangwa, an outstanding jazz diva, said every year on Valentine’s Day she volunteers her time to help the underprivileged.

“It is more important to put a smile on the face of the one who needs it most. That’s why l choose to spend my time at a shelter either donating clothes or doing any kind of work,” she said.
