A snap survey by The Zimbabwean revealed that residents without proof of residence were finding it difficult to register as voters.
In Chitungwiza, landlords are reportedly demanding payment of at least $5 from their lodgers for proof of residence.
“My landlord told me that if I was serious about getting the proof of residence, I had to give her the money,” said a 32-year-old mother of two.
She said trying to register at Chitungwiza Central Hospital as a voter without proof of residence was impossible.
The necessary documentary evidence to prove that an applicant is currently residing in the ward or constituency includes: a certificate of occupation, title deeds, lodgers permit or card, rates or electricity statement in the applicant’s name or a written statement from a landlord.
