Elders push for political coalition

A group of concerned elders in the two Matabeleland Provinces has outlined plans to engage political parties in the region to form a coalition ahead of the elections to avoid splitting the vote.

According to a draft document made available to The Zimbabwean, they aim to persuade the MDC (Welshman Ncube formation), Zapu and the Patriotic Union of Matabelaland (Puma) to coalesce.

“The Concerned Elders resolve to engage the three political parties in the region and to convince them to unite in a common purpose, act as one and speak as one in the forthcoming election,” reads the document titled The Concerns of the Elders from Matabeleland.

“Convinced that Matabeleland being a minority in the political landscape, but being united in a common purpose and acting and speaking with one voice at the elections, it can have tremendous political impact in the politics of this country.”

According to the preamble, the membership criteria for the Elders of Matabeleland is 70 years and above. Prospective members must hold no position in any political party.

This is not the first time a coalition has been mooted in the region. Recently, officials from Zapu and the MDC-N confirmed discussions, which would see Zapu backing Welshman Ncube for President.
