EU eases sanctions: What they said

As a reward for agreeing on the new constitution, the European Union on Monday unfroze travel bans for six cabinet ministers and delisted 22 other Zanu (PF) functionaries.

The EU said the move had also been motivated by the SADC initiative “in supporting the efforts of the Zimbabwean parties to implement the GPA and the SADC Roadmap” towards a reformed Zimbabwe following years of political upheavals.

The news was received with mixed emotions:

MDC-Ncube spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube: “The development is welcome as Zanu(PF) will no longer have excuses for not meeting their end of the GPA deal. Targeted sanctions armed Zanu (PF) with unreasonable excuses to be lethargic towards the GPA.”

MDC-T, Douglas Mwonzora: “Zanu (PF) should be grateful for this development, which to us the party does not deserve. The suspension of these travel bans should correspond with their behaviour. Zanu (PF) should desist from its violent character.”

Simbarashe Mumbengegwi (Zanu (PF) and Foreign Affairs Minister): “It is totally meaningless. As long as one

Zimbabwean is under sanctions, then the whole country is under sanctions. The sanctions should be removed in totality and unconditionally. These efforts to try and divide us will never work.”

MDC-99 President Job Sikhala: “EU is now making decisions to please the enemy of people of Zimbabwe hoping that probably coming elections will be free and fair elections.”

ZAPU: “We have no comment since the targeted sanctions issue is between Zanu (PF) and those who imposed them.”

Mavambo spokesperson, Joel Mapawura: “We are yet to sit and have a common position regarding the EU lifting of travel ban and delisting issue.”
