He is doing that through his Parents In Sport initiative, formed last September, after he noticed, academies formed by especially former football players were not getting enough of the relevant support from parents.
Worse still, there was also no effort to educate these parents of the need to take sport as a profession and assist, rather than discourage, children who may have an inclination towards it.
“The initiative is designed to shape the attitude of parents and make them understand the benefits their children can derive from sport,” said the former player. “Parents should speak the same language as their children … they have to support kids who are interested in sport and assist them to balance academic work and sporting activities.
“That is why we came up with the idea of forming Parents In Sport. At the moment we are focusing on football and working with academies in my neighbourhood of Mabvuku.”
He noted that many children were staying with relatives and guardians, either because their parents were outside the country or had passed on, but some of these guardians were not very supportive on sporting activities.
The initiative recently formed a social league to try and help generate interest for parents in Mabvuku and reach out to more people. It also plans to form its own academy and become a sports consultancy.
