Funding the Diaspora trade

When Tafadzwa Charamba realised that most Zimbabweans in the Diaspora were struggling financially, he saw an opportunity to develop a business.

Launched in 2009, TACHLO Group Pty is one of the fastest growing companies in the SADC region. It provides finance and trade in medical supplies, scientific media and insurance. With many outlets in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, plans for further pan-African expansion are under way.

“TACHLO group committed itself to those in the Diaspora who are struggling financially. We help people with personal loans from R1 000 to R50 000. For business financing, we provide loans from R10 000 to R100 000. This is a legal process with both parties signing contracts before the transfer of money to their accounts. We finance Zimbabweans in the UK, USA, Asia and Australia who are struggling to meet their daily needs,” said the 35-year-old Harare businessman.

“Through our Health and Medical department, we supply various medical institutions with medical equipment. We also handle insurance for cars, property and life. This is an opportunity for Zimbabweans to partner with us,” he said.

TACHLO Group, through its Scientific Media brand, is one of South Africa’s largest suppliers of scientific media laboratory papers

Charamba believes that for a business that involves so many partners to succeed, it’s essential to keep processes as simple and practical as possible. “In Africa we have huge populations, great resources, vast arable land, and high unemployment,” he said. “Come and get started as early as you can, because you need time to make mistakes – and the opportunities are huge.”

“All entrepreneurs suffer periodic ups and downs and running a successful, profitable business isn’t easy. If it was, everybody would be doing it. But this is Africa’s time and the demand within our own continent’s domestic economy needs satisfying. This is a huge opportunity for entrepreneurial, hardworking individuals,” he said. Charamba’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to keep going, keep believing and never give up.

“I am driven by a need to see Africa prosper and compete aggressively on a global scale. I am very passionate about this and firmly believe that the Indian Tiger and the Chinese Dragon have had their day and it is now time for the African lion! TACHLO Group proudly wears the logo of the African lion to symbolize Africa’s coming of age and we champion this cause in any way we can,” said Charamba.

Charamba’s determination to put African business on the global map, his courage to take risks as well as his belief that “the day your arrogance or ego kicks in, it’s all over” are all aspects that make him an entrepreneur to admire.
