General election timeline not yet agreed: Mangwana

The July timeline for the holding of harmonised polls announced recently by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai are not final as there is no consensus, says Zanu (PF) Copac Co-chairperson Paul Mangwana.

Mangwana insisted in an interview that President Robert Mugabe would be the one to announce the election dates.

Tsvangirai on Wednesday said he expected the general elections to be held in July after a national referendum on the draft constitution that will be conducted on 16 March.

“I am sure Tsvangirai was proclaiming his own opinion when he said elections will be held in July. Constitutionally, the President is supposed to announce the date after consultation with his Global Political Agreement principals. We are still waiting for the date to be set,” said Mangwana.

The current presidential and parliamentary term expires at the end of June and elections are expected to be held soon after.

Last week the United Nations Development Programme approved Zimbabwe’s request for $250 million for the purposes of administering the constitutional referendum and general election.
