German garbage trucks grounded

Four garbage collection trucks donated to the local council by Germany Agency for International Cooperation have been grounded since October due to failure by the local authority to secure spare parts for the vehicles.

Irate residents led by Cornelias Selipiwe, chairperson of the Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association, have put forward a petition expressing their concern that a health disaster is looming.

Sources said continued failure by the local authority to put the donated trucks back on the road so that they serve the city might cut future ties with the Eschborn-based NGO.

The residents also threatened to raise the matter with the local government ministry if council does not take immediate action.

Chimombe said the problem was with the Mercedes Benz radiators and computer boxes. He said local Merc agent ZIMOCO had failed to either provide spares or fix the vehicles.

“Since the vehicles broke down last year, we have not been able to secure spare parts so that smooth flow of refuse collection could resume,” he said.

Mayor Chimombe also disclosed that council had put in an order for another truck through local motor dealer ZIMOCO. The vehicle is expected in the city in three weeks’ time so that service delivery can be restored.

“We have also communicated with a German-based company and they are sending an Engineer to fix the vehicles.”

When asked why such measures were not taken last year, Chimombe blamed local vehicle company, Dullis, for not fixing the vehicles that had been with them since November.
