Go-Beer dragged to court

The only opaque beer manufacturing firm here, Go-Beer Breweries, has been taken to the High Court over an outstanding debt of $ 200 000 the company owes to workers as a pension fund.

The development comes after the workers held the company management hostage and locked all the firm’s vehicles away in a bid to push for payment of outstanding salaries dating back to 2010.

The company also has a whopping $1,4million debt owed to creditors and a further $500 000 unpaid bank loan which has seen them leasing all their beer halls and bottle stores in a last ditch effort to settle the arrears. On January 4, Go-Beer was served with a summons. The firm’s lawyer, Jumo Mashoko, said the company should simply pay up.

Sources said the company had adequate capacity to boost production but was struggling because of maladministration.

“The company has farms to produce raw materials needed. At one time they had opened up trade avenues in Zambia but because things are not being done by the book, we have been plunged into this mess,” said an inside source.
