Home-grown film on cards

Zimbabwean film lovers will soon get the chance to watch a new home-grown film. Penned by award-winning writer Masimba Musodza, Chishamiso will be shot in Zimbabwe soon, according to South African-based model, actor and playwright Melgin Tafirenyika, who is also part of the cast.

Directed by Angeline Dimingo the film is based on Musodza’s short story with the same title. Its theme is whether any man can revive the fortunes of a woman who has been ruined by another man.

“The main character, Declan, is on a visit to his native Zimbabwe to see his terminally ill brother. He encounters Chishamiso, a teenage prostitute with a baby to fend for. Hers is the template story of the girls who end up in the slums of Harare’s periphery. She was raped at a party and sent away from home in disgrace. Declan feels that he is the man to save her – but a secret waits to be revealed, which will change everything,” said Tafirenyika in a recent interview.

The cast includes Delma Chaweresa of the popular movie “Lobola”, written and directed by Joe Jangu, while Damingo is the face in the popular Econet billboard.

This is not the first time Tafirenyika has been involved with a film that explores women’s ruinous first encounters with men. Last year, the 27-year-old wrote and acted his debut play, “I will marry myself”, a fascinating story about an African girl who was so desperate for marriage that she ended up paying her own bride price in order to fulfil her dream of being a wife.

Tafirenyika stars as Coaster, the lead character. The film also stars former Zimbabwean model Siphiwe Show and was directed by top South African director, Stephen Visser.
