Ignore Sibanda: MDC VAA

The MDC Veterans Activists Association recently advised fellow party activists and supporters to ignore the threats of war veterans’ leader, Jabulani Sibanda, in their bid to deliver a new Zimbabwe.

Ahead of campaigns for constitutional referendum and elections, Sibanda has embarked on another trail of intimidation against President Robert Mugabe’s political opponents.

Oliver Zireva, the MDC VAA’s head of security, told The Zimbabwean this week that his organisation had already spoken to fellow activists throughout the country, advising them not to mind Sibanda.

He accused Sibanda of trying to stoke flames that would prompt a possible retaliation from the MDC and invite security sector violence on the former opposition party.

“We have learnt with much displeasure, the disheartening news that Sibanda and his war veterans have started their barbaric behaviour of terrorising villagers countrywide ahead of the elections,” said Zireva, who also advised MDC members not to respond to Sibanda’s violence, but to instead concentrate on the MDC’s democracy path.

“The MDC was not formed on a template of violence and our message to party supporters is that they should not lose focus of our founding ideals of bringing democracy and economic prosperity back to Zimbabwe,” he said.

He added that it was surprising that, despite the fact that all of the country’s political leaders, including Mugabe, were preaching peaceful campaigning in preparation for free and fair polls, Sibanda, who claimed to be working for the former ruling party, was still intent on causing more havoc.
