Land reform: Hanlon is right

EDITOR - I’ve just read in The Zimbabwean dated 14 February the first part of your riveting feature article: Land reform :Truth, Lies and damn statistics by Trevor Grundy. The article’s content is so very objective, and as far as I am concerned what Hanlon told Grundy is an accurate assessment of the situation in Zimbabwe at that point in time.

When Hanlon refers to farm invasions he doesn’t condone the violence, but rather puts it into context and perspective. He is quick to realise the provocation perpetrated by white farmers, when they allowed themselves to be filmed by CNN giving cheques to MDC opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Hanlon was quite right in pointing out the majority of white farmers never integrated. The integration that did take place was within the leadership of the Union representing the white farmers. That integration was initially prompted and assisted by Lord Soames, the country’s interim governor prior to Independence. It was Soames who persuaded Mugabe to appoint the president of the commercial farmers’ union. Denis Norman, as his minister of agriculture. I’m looking forward to the next instalment. – Mike Rook, Former CEO,Modern Farming Publications
